Financial

  • Traditional Online Course- $75.00 per credit hour
  • HELPHS Online Course- $75.00 per credit hour
  • Modified HELPHS Online Course- $25.00 per credit hour

Instructional Content

  • Most online courses can be found on the VU Blackboard system.
  • HELPHS instructors and school administrators can access the VU Blackboard courses using the general username and password for your school. Contact the Distance Education Office for assistance.
  • The username for students is generated in Banner under the SPAIDEN screen (the first portion of the VU previously preferred email address).
  • In Banner all early college online courses are created as an H section. In Blackboard, it will show as an H section if there are 5 or more students. If there are less than 5 students they will show in a D section.
  • The Math and some of the Music courses are taught on an outside site that is connected the textbook or course materials that can be purchased at the VU Bookstore.

Grades

  • Both midterm and final grades are posted by the online instructor to the MyVU system.
  • If the course is taught as a HELPHS or Modified HELPHS course then the classroom instructor and assistant dean will need to work with the online instructor to see grades throughout the semester.

Quality Assurance

  • The Assistant Deans are to send a status report of each class. The status reports will be sent to the  Assistant Vice President of Lifelong Learning and Dean of Early College. First report due 2 weeks after the start date of the semester and the second report due at midterm.
  • All online instructors are required to go through credential approvals.
  • All online instructors are required to complete online instructor training prior to teaching online.
  • Online courses are reviewed by VU Distance Education Committee.
  • Gradebook access and tests are secured by access privledges and passwords.
  • Exams are proctored at the high school.

Course Definitions

Traditional Online Course-

  • Taught by a VU approved instructor
  • Instructor has completed the online instructor training
  • Online course is a VU reviewed and approved course
  • No HELPHS classroom instructor

HELPHS Online Course-

  • Taught by a VU approved instructor
  • Instructor has completed the online instructor training
  • Online course is a VU reviewed and approved course
  • A HELPHS classroom instructor is present to provide the following support:
    • proctoring
    • schedule checks for students
    • alert VU instructor of any issues with students
    • gradebook is shared periodically with HELPHS instructor to help them keep up with student progress

Modified HELPHS Online Course-

  • Taught by a high school instructor licensed in the state of Indiana
  • Instructor is employed at an Indiana high school
  • Instructor has been approved by VU to teach the college course
  • Instructor must complete the online instructor training program
  • Online course is a VU reviewed and approved course
  • A HELPHS classroom instructor is present to provide the following support:
    • the classroom instructor must have an education plan with continued progress on file with the VU Provost's Office
    • proctoring
    • assist in providing feedback for students to online instructor
    • schedule checks for students to make sure they are on track
    • alert online instructor of any issues with students
    • assist in delivering supplemental instruction of the course content
    • contact online instructor with content questions
    • communicate weekly with online instructor
    • give online instructor a weekly status report
    • gradebook is shared periodically with HELPHS instructor to help them keep up with student progress

Request Online Course

COURSE REQUEST FORM

  • Please request online courses through the webform.
  • Once the request has been received it will be reviewed and approved for online delivery.
  • The course requests will be added to Banner and Blackboard.
  • An email will be sent to you with the CRNs letting you know that the course was approved and set up in Banner. If it cannot be approved the Assistant Dean at the site will be emailed.
  • All online course requests need to be in 2 weeks before the course start date. If you have an emergency please contact the Assistant Vice President of Lifelong Learning.
  • Instructor availability is not guaranteed, but the sooner the request the better chance.

Registration

  • The early college online students will be registered to the courses in Banner by the Early College Site.
  • The early college online students will be dropped from the course in Banner by the Early College Site. We do ask that you email the VU Online Instructor about the drop so the student can be removed from the course site.
  • Section Key: H01 (16 weeks), H81 (1st 8 weeks), H91 (2nd 8 weeks), H51 (14 weeks), H41 (12 weeks), H31 (10 weeks).
  • Please be sure to run a search in Banner before adding the student. It is important that we do not create duplicate ids as it is hard to correct them in Banner and in Blackboard.
  • Please make sure that students have a preferred email address when registering for classes. The system will not populate the students into the courses if the preferred email is missing.
  • Please be sure to add the high school attribute when registering students so that the student is charged the correct tuition.

Complaints

  • Complaints that involve the online course or online instructor need to be address using the following process: VU Assistant Dean emails the Assistant Vice President of Lifelong Learning. Please copy the Dean of Early College.
  • Assistant Vice President of Lifelong Learning will gather information from the online instructor and the Assistant Dean.
  • Assistant Vice President of Lifelong Learning will review the information and a decision will be sent by email to the Assistant Dean.
  • If the complaint cannot be resolved by the Assistant Vice President of Lifelong Learning the information will be sent to the Vice President of Workforce Development and Community Relations for action.
  • For grade dispute start with the course instructor. If the dispute cannot be resolved contact the  Assistant Vice President of Lifelong Learning (please copy the dean of early college). The  Assistant Vice President of Lifelong Learning will contact the instructor for a response then the information will be sent to the Chair of the Program for review. The program chair will send an email of the decision to the  Assistant Vice President of Lifelong Learning who will forward the decision to the Dean of Early College and the Assistant Dean.
