With the support of a dedicated advisor, Sam Cotton '84 found his passion at Vincennes University and launched a lengthy career in the tech world. He is an Electronics graduate who now leads as Director of IT for three commercial construction companies in Columbus, Indiana. Sam proudly considers himself and his fellow Trailblazers pioneers of modern computing. He credits VU with giving students the skills and confidence to enter the workforce quickly—and thrive.

In this Alumni Q&A, Sam explores the journey of discovering his career pathway and the evolution of his career.

Q: Why did you choose VU?

“I wanted to get into the workforce quickly with a degree. I had a couple of friends already attending VU.”

Q: Why did you choose to study Electronics?

“Honestly, I was lost, and the advisor at VU set me on this path. I was thinking maybe business, but she figured out I was a bit of a geek and suggested Electronics, which was turning into a computer program. VU gave me structure and a goal. We were pioneers of modern computing. Jobs were scarce in 1984, but having a degree helped.”

Q: Tell us about your professional career.

“My first job was in Evansville with a graphic arts/printing equipment supplier as a field service tech, then I moved to Louisville with Unisys as a field tech and eventually opened my own computer store in Columbus, Indiana. Now, I run IT for a construction company in Columbus.”

Q: How did VU prepare you for your career?

“VU is small enough to keep you grounded. It had a well-structured program, and the staff really cared about the students.”

Q: What advice would you give prospective students?

“Go for it! In two years, you can be in the workforce without a ton of debt.”

Q: Looking back, what are you most grateful for from your time at VU?

“The camaraderie with other students and the leadership from the staff and faculty. Without it, I would most likely still be lost.”

Q: Why is VU a special place?

“It’s where my life really began. I can remember tubing down the river on a regular basis as well as meeting in the library to study for tests.”
