Red Skelton Museum launches “Year of the Pledge” celebration
January 14, 2019
VINCENNES, Ind. - Legendary comedian Red Skelton broadcast his stirring rendition
of “The Pledge of Allegiance” on the Red Skelton Hour on January 14, 1969. Using the
persona of his grade school principal, Mr. Lasswell, Skelton meticulously explained
every line of the Pledge, which remains as poignant today as it was 50 years ago.
On Tuesday, Jan. 15, 10 a.m. (EST), the Red Skelton Museum of American Comedy in Vincennes,
Indiana, launched a year-long celebration of “Red’s Pledge” with an exhibit opening
that features artifacts, news articles, and letters from senators and congressmen.
The Pledge Anniversary event will feature the Lincoln band playing Red’s White and
Blue march, a video montage of celebrities reciting Red’s Pledge, and remarks from
area dignitaries.
Red Skelton’s Pledge made a tremendous impact when it first aired and continues to
inspire citizens today. It has been read into the congressional record four times
since 1969.
Events celebrating the Pledge will continue throughout the year, with the next scheduled
for Flag Day on June 14. Details about upcoming events surrounding the “Year of the
Pledge” are available at RedSkeltonMuseum.org.
