VINCENNES, Ind. – Vincennes University has completed a major overhaul to the Curtis G. Shake Learning Resource Center to create a student-centered hub with flexible, digital-oriented features.

VU will celebrate the completion of the renovations with an open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST Jan. 21. Nearly $8 million was appropriated for the project.

The open house will include a rededication ceremony in the lobby at 10 a.m. with remarks from Dr. Laura Treanor, VU Provost and Vice President of Instructional Services/Dean of Faculty, and Director of Architectural Services and Facilities Andrew Young. Refreshments and tours will follow. Current students will have the opportunity to win prizes.

The Resource Center provides a convenient location for students to use several support departments such as the Center for Teaching and Learning; Counseling Center; Office of Diverse Abilities and Accommodations; Knowledge Market; Shake Library; and the Student Success Center and Testing Center.

“We’re hoping we’ve created a one-stop shop for students for many services,” said Rick Kribs, VU Assistant Provost for Curriculum and Instruction. “From a user perspective, it has a lot of services organized together.”

All VU students have access to confidential emotional counseling and consultation in the Counseling Center. The Testing Center provides institutional and certification exam administration and proctoring related services to prospective and current students, community members, businesses and many other groups throughout Indiana. The Student Success Center helps with advising and registering for classes, assists with changing majors, campus resources, and encourages students to achieve and maintain good academic standing.

The Shake Library provides research help in addition to a vast selection of print and online sources. VU students can get free assistance for speeches, projects, presentations and other assignments through the Knowledge Market. The Office of Diverse Abilities and Accommodations helps students with diverse needs participate more fully in educational programming, benefit from an accessible environment, and achieve greater academic and personal success.

Renovations have given the Resource Center a completely different look inside and out. The center offers group and individual study spaces with movable furniture. Other features include laptop chairs, computer stations, and charging ports. Upgrades also include a coffee shop and a patio.

“We want to up the game and be able to engage with students on a variety of levels,” Director of Library Services Charla Gilbert said. “The renovation of the new space will allow us to do that.”
