VINCENNES, Ind. - “America's Descent Down the Rabbit Hole of Opioid Abuse: Building a Ladder Through Prevention, Treatment, and Enforcement,” is the topic of the 2018 Vincennes University Homeland Security and Public Safety Capstone Symposium.

The symposium will take place on March 24 at VU’s Beckes Student Union. Pre-registration is required and can be completed online at www.vinu.edu/web/college-of-business-and-public-service/homeland-security. Check-in will begin at 8:00 a.m. (EDT), and the symposium will run from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

Professionals in the fields of law enforcement, fire services, emergency services, healthcare, and social services may utilize the Symposium as an approved continuing education event. Attendees will be awarded a certificate of completion at the event’s conclusion.

VU’s Homeland Security program educates students on national security, terrorism, crisis and emergency management, and corporate loss prevention through excellence and innovation in education and research taught by highly experienced homeland security professionals.

The purpose of the Capstone Symposium is to allow students in their final year of the Homeland Security Bachelor’s Degree program to showcase their accumulative knowledge gained toward a specific topic. Students will be addressing a detailed overview of today’s opioid crisis, its prevention through community programs, treatment by healthcare professionals, and enforcement by first responders. There will also be keynote speakers, including the Superintendent of the Indiana State Police, to discuss current trends and positive solutions to the nationwide epidemic.
