Full-time Student Status

Full-time enrollment is equivalent to 12 credits during the standard 16-week enrollment period for Fall and Spring semesters. You must be enrolled in 12 credits for the entire term to remain in full-time status. When an enrollment period is less than 16 weeks, enrollment status is prorated on a calculated semester hour equivalency (i.e. the shorter the term, the fewer credit hours required for full-time status). Students will only receive benefits for the actual days they are enrolled in a semester.

Monthly Enrollment Verification

Chapter 33:  Chapter 33 students are now required to verify their enrollment status monthly to continue receiving their BAH payments. You will verify your enrollment via text (see instructions here) or by contacting the Education Call Center at 1-888-442-4551. If you fail to verify your enrollment for two consecutive months your BAH payments will be placed on hold. You will then have to take additional steps to verify your enrollment and have the payments resumed.

Chapters 30, 1606, and 1607:  You may verify your enrollment online using the VA's Enrollment Tool. You may verify anytime beginning the last day of the month. If you do not verify, a payment will not be issued.

Chapters 31 and 35 do not have to verify their enrollment monthly.

Developmental/Remedial Courses

Developmental/remedial courses (course numbers less than 100-level) cannot be certified to the VA if taken online. Online remedial courses will not factor in when determining your full-time enrollment status and will have to be funded by sources other than VA Education Benefits.

Eligible Courses

Only courses that are required for your degree program will be certified to the VA. VSS uses DegreeWorks to determine requirements. It is the student's responsibility to review their schedule each semester with their advisor to confirm eligibility of their courses. If you have any questions about particular courses, please contact VSS for clarification or assistance.

Enrollment Changes

All changes in enrollment must be reported to VSS immediately. This includes adds, drops, withdrawals, and changes of program. Delayed reporting of changes could result in an overpayment from the VA. Administrative corrections to certifications to adhere to VA Policy may result in a student debt either to VU or the Department of Veterans Affairs.

If you are a military student who is activated or reactivated during the semester, you should contact Veterans Support Services at veterans@vinu.edu. You will need to complete a withdrawal form and submit a copy of your active duty orders.

Yellow Ribbon Program

Yellow Ribbon is a provision of the Post 9/11 GI Bill® that allows out of state students to receive additional funding above the in-state cap. The GI Bill® will cover the in-state portion of a student's tuition and Yellow Ribbon will provide up to $2000 more per semester. Because this award is only for out of state students, veterans attending classes on campus do not need to apply; they are eligible to be billed as in-state students. You can read more about the program on the VA's website.

Yellow Ribbon: VU pays up to $1,000 a semester and the VA matches this amount for a total of up to $2,000 a semester or up to $4,000 per academic year.

  • Must be billed as an out of state student
  • Student must be 100% eligible for the GI Bill®
  • We will not retroactively award Yellow Ribbon
