What can I expect during my time at VU?

The Photojournalism A.S. transfer program at Vincennes University is designed to prepare students for two main pathways: transfer to a four-year photojournalism program or entry-level employment in photojournalism immediately after graduation.  Students will experience:

  • Multimedia instruction: Students receive instruction in various media, including photography, video production, and computer imaging.
  • Early involvement with the student newspaper: Starting in their first semester, students will contribute to the award-winning student newspaper, The Trailblazer, which is a student-run, multimedia news organization covering campus and community news. 
  • Access to industry-standard resources: Students will work in a newly redesigned Journalism Lab equipped with industry-standard Macintosh computers, Adobe Creative Suite software, and DSLR cameras. 
  • A focus on visual storytelling: The program emphasizes telling true stories through images. 
  • Development of news gathering techniques and design principles: Students will learn the essential skills of gathering news and designing visual content. 
  • Coverage of core journalism principles: The curriculum includes courses like News Reporting, Editing, Communication Law, and Mass Communication.

What can I do with this degree?

Photojournalism graduates entering the workforce with the A.S. degree can qualify for entry-level positions such as:

  • Photojournalist for local publications or websites: Graduates can apply their photography and storytelling skills to capture images for news articles, feature stories, and other publications.
  • Assistant Editor: Graduates with a strong understanding of editing principles and software like Adobe Creative Suite can assist senior editors with tasks like copyediting, fact-checking, and proofreading.
  • Social Media Manager for News Organizations: With the growing importance of digital media, graduates with a strong understanding of social media platforms and content creation can manage the online presence of news outlets.
