IBA All-District Honor Band will perform at VU on Nov. 18

VINCENNES, Ind. - The Vincennes University Department of Music will host the Southwest Indiana Bandmasters Association 2018 All-District Honor Band on Nov. 17-18. VU is one of 10 Indiana sites that will host an IBA event.

Student musicians from 17 area high schools will be featured, under the direction of guest conductor Katy Briel. The 78-piece ensemble will rehearse all day Saturday and part of Sunday, followed by a performance on Nov. 18, 4 p.m. (EST), at VU’s Red Skelton Performing Arts Center. Admission is free.

Participating schools include Barr-Reeve, Boonville, Forest Park, Heritage Hills, Linton-Stockton, Loogootee, Mater Dei, North Daviess, North Knox, Pike Central, Princeton, South Knox, Southridge, Tecumseh, Terre Haute West Vigo, Vincennes Lincoln, and Washington.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR

Kathryn “Katy” Briel is in her fourteenth year as Band Director at Clark-Pleasant Middle School in Greenwood, Indiana.  Her responsibilities include teaching four middle school concert bands, a middle school jazz band, and beginning brass, as well as assisting with the Whiteland Community High School Marching Band and WCHS Leadership Team.  The Clark-Pleasant Middle School Bands have been an Indiana State School Music Association Junior High All-Music Award recipient for the past four years and consistently receive gold ratings at ISSMA Concert Band contest.  Prior to her position with the Clark-Pleasant Bands, Briel was band director for two years at Lincoln Junior High School in Plymouth, Indiana.  She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Ball State University in May 2004.

Briel is a board member for the Indiana Bandmasters Association, the Indiana Music Educators Association, and the Indiana State School Music Association.  For the past seven years, she has served as band director coordinator for the Drum Corps International INpact Band: Indiana’s Future Band, a middle school ensemble comprised of students selected from schools across the state of Indiana which performs at the DCI World Championship in Indianapolis each year.  She is also a part of the expansion for the DCI BANDtastic weekends in Minnesota and Atlanta. 

Briel is a member of the Leadership Staff for the Indiana State University Sycamore Drum Major and Leadership Clinic and is a staff member for the Indiana Ambassadors of Music, where she has been a director on four European tours.  She serves as a clinician and adjudicator for ISSMA Solo and Ensemble Contest and Concert Band Organizational Contest, and has been a guest conductor for IBA’s All-Region Honor Band on several occasions.  She has also been selected to be the guest conductor for the 2019 Heartland Middle School Honor Band at South Florida State University.
