CARTERVILLE, Ill. -- The Vincennes University Women’s Basketball team returned to its winning ways Wednesday night with a road win.

The Trailblazers stopped a brief two-game losing streak with a 79-51 win over District P foe John A. Logan (3-2, 0-1).

VU (4-2, 1-0) jumped out to a 22-10 lead after the first 10 minutes of play and never looked back.

“We scripted the first four or five plays and ended up with some nice and easy passes which led to some easy layups,” Trailblazers coach Harry Meeks said of the start. “Tonight was a much better start (than last two games). But when you are making shots like we did at the start, the whole game changes.”

Jaynice Stovall led the way with 14 points and four assists. Stovall, who entered the game leading all NJCAA Division I players in steals per game, added four more steals in the win.

“She had another exceptional game for us,” Meeks said. “She knocked down a couple of three pointers which she is a pretty good shooter...she needs to make that into a part of her game more.”

Jhala Henry (13), Reeva Hammelman (10) and Ivanda Hudjakova (10) all joined Stovall with double digit points in the win. Hudjakova finished the game with a double-double as she pulled down 10 rebounds, while Hammelman added five boards and four steals.

Fess Hawkins led VU with 12 rebounds.

“Fess was a major factor in rebounding for us,” coach Meeks said. “She just needs to do a little better job of finishing around the rim.”

Hawkins finished with four points.

Much like in the first three games of the season, VU turned its defense into instant offense. The Trailblazers came away with 18 steals in the game and forced the Lady Vols into 29 turnovers.

“We were able to press their point guard the whole game which was a big factor in the outcome,” the veteran VU coach stated. “We finally were able to get back to playing with the same upbeat and fast tempo like we did the first couple of games.”

The Trailblazers led 37-18 at the half and put the game away by out scoring John A. Logan 25-10 in the third quarter.

After shooting just 30 percent from the field in a pair of losses over the weekend, VU shot 31-for-76 (41 percent) Wednesday night.

“I think we just came out and played in a different frame of mind,” Meeks said. “We still have some room for improvement.”

VU returns to the court over the weekend in the Sodexo Classic. The Trailblazers play host to State Fair Friday night before entertaining No. 3 Gulf Coast State Saturday afternoon.
